What do your peers think of you? And how does that help or hinder you in your work?
We can all tell ourselves stories about who we are and what we’re good at, but what’s more important in the workplace is what others think of our skills, talents and performance.
Most personality assessments focus on identity. Hogan assessments focus on reputation. Built on decades of research, they’re widely regarded as the most reliable psychometric tool for predicting workplace success and leadership potential. They’re useful in hiring decisions, but also in helping leaders and teams develop their skills, talents and careers.
Hogan assessments can give you some of the data you need to address your blind spots. They can show you aspects of your behaviour or personality that could derail you in your career.
The assessment is divided into three sections and takes about an hour to complete:
Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI). This looks at how you usually show up in your workplace. It explores factors like ambition, leadership qualities, learning approach, interpersonal sensitivity and sociability.
Hogan Development Survey (HDS). This measures the characteristics that can emerge when you’re under stress. Whether, for example, you have a tendency to be a bit too cautious, aggressive or excitable. This can be salutary, but useful!
Motives, Values, Preferences Inventory (MVPI). This looks at what drives you – your values, goals and interests. Understanding this will help you in your decision-making, goal setting and in having a clearer sense of whether you’re in the right role.
I’ve been sceptical about psychometric assessments in the past, but Hogan has converted me. I’ve found their assessments to be an extremely powerful tool in coaching, but also helpful on their own. I can offer the full set as a standalone package (with initial consultation, detailed analysis and debriefing) or as a starting point for executive and leadership coaching. Knowledge, as the great jazz musician Miles Davis once said, is freedom. And who doesn’t want to be free?!
